With half-day Fridays, work Christmas parties, and your boss off the grid - you can imagine why December and January are Australia’s most breezy months in the office!
Why not use this extra time to start the small business of your dreams? Here is our 8-week guide:
December Week 1 - Business Plan
Welcome to summer! It’s only 24 days until Christmas and there’s blue skies all the way. This week, knuckle down and create a business plan. Use this opportunity to finally make some money from that idea that you’ve spent years pondering. Research potential competitors and decide where your product or service will fit into the marketplace. But before you put pen to paper, steer your creative vision in the right direction by learning five steps to create the perfect business plan.
December Week 2 - Business Structures
Learn about the three most common business structures in Australia - sole traders, companies and partnerships. Discover the advantages and disadvantages of each, and work out which structure matches your goals. Choosing the right business structure for your side hustle will benefit you in the long run!
December Week 3 - Brand Your Business
Good branding is at the core of your business and will separate your start-up from your competitors. The father of advertising, David Ogilvy, defines branding as “the intangible sum of a product’s attributes: its name, packaging, and price, its history, its reputation, and the way it’s advertised.”
Perhaps you’ll use this week to enhance your marketing effectiveness by learning the science behind colour. Or call one of our friendly business specialists to help you with a logo - on 1300 550 730 from 8am to 11pm (AEST), 7 days a week.
December Week 4 - Ask For Advice
In the week of Christmas, it’s a great idea to ask family and friends for advice on your small business proposal. Creativity comes in all shapes and sizes. Someone may have a great website idea, or perhaps can solve a distribution problem you may be facing. Get a head start by reading the subtle art of asking for advice.
January Week 5 - ABN
Happy New Year! It’s now time to start putting your plan into action. The first step is applying for an ABN. ABN stands for an Australian business number. It’s a list of 11 digits that declares your business, side hustle or startup to the ATO (Australian Taxation Office). You can apply for an ABN direct to your inbox in just 15 minutes. Use this week to learn about the benefits of applying for an ABN.
January Week 6 - Business Name
One of the most exciting steps of launching your small business is locking in a business name. Use your time this week to brainstorm and test potential names. We recommend these steps to take you from business name idea to registration. Found the perfect name? Head on over to Australia's simplest business name registration service to check its availability and launch your application.
January Week 7 - Domain Name
Once you have locked in a business name, choosing your domain name should be a piece of cake! A domain name is a URL that links to your website - it usually looks something like www.honcho.com. Use this week to learn how to register a domain name. Consider going local with .com.au.
